I have known Pinterest but I didn’t get the chance to use it until January of 2020. A lot of bloggers rave about Pinterest in helping increase website traffic. Of course, I was hesitant, considering that managing a Facebook page, group, and Instagram is a lot of work already. But after researching and joining Facebook groups with Pinterest share threads, I realized, it’s worth a shot.
For this tutorial, I’m going to use the Pinterest account of my pet blog.
How to set up Pinterest for your new blog in 5 easy steps
1. Claim your website
To do this, all you have to do is log in to your Pinterest account, go to settings > claim > enter your website URL > claim
Go to your WordPress dashboard > make sure you installed the Insert headers and footers plugin > copy the code for Pinterest > paste it there and click save.
Next, go back to Pinterest > click next > done

Aside from your website, you can also claim other accounts like:
- Etsy
- YouTube
- Shopify
But claiming your website is the most important step in this process.
According to Pinterest:
Claim your website to get access to analytics for the Pins you publish from your site, the analytics on Pins that other people create from your site and let people know where they can find more of your content. Your profile picture will show up next to any Pins that come from your site, and a the globe icon will appear next to your website URL on your profile.
2. Convert your Pinterest account from personal to business
According to Pinterest, having a business account allows you to have free access to Pinterest analytics that help grow your professional presence on Pinterest. It is very easy to switch from your personal to a business account. In fact, you can link up to 4 business profiles on your personal account.
However, I find it confusing to toggle between a personal and business account. Besides, our main purpose is to use Pinterest for business.
So, instead of having multiple accounts, I’d rather convert a personal account to a business account.
Speaking of benefits, a business account allows you to have access to analytics, which boards are performing well, and which pins are getting more views and clicks. This way, you’ll be able to customize your pinning strategies to achieve better results.
To do this, simply go to account settings > scroll down > and click convert account

How would you know when you’re account is already a business account? As you can see from the image above, under account changes, you see the option to convert to personal account. This means your account has successfully been converted to business.
3. Upload a Pinterest profile photo
From my experience handling different Pinterest accounts from various niches, I find that Pinterest accounts that use photos perform better than those with company logos.
Or, there are instances when it really depends on the blogger and niche.
For example, this is a Pinterest account for a pet blog. Therefore, I’d rather use an actual photo of a Shih Tzu puppy, instead of a company logo.
To upload or change your profile image, just click change, upload and then click done.
4. Create niche related Pinterest boards
For this account I’ll start with 5 Pinterest boards.
Here are the board titles I came up with
- Shih Tzu care guide – my very best
- Must have dog supplies
- Homemade dog food recipes
- Dog grooming tips at home
- Dog training tips
I choose these board titles based on my Pinterest SEO keyword research, and the keyword research I did with Ahrefs.

5. Add Pinterest sidebar widget in your WordPress blog
Our last step on how to set up Pinterest for your new blog is to make sure that it’s showing up in the sidebar widget. This way, visitors would find it easy to follow you on Pinterest, and see your most relevant board.
First, open a new tab and click Pinterest developers.
Next, click Tools.

Then, click Board, scroll down, and copy the codes below. Do not forget to update the Pinterest board URL Or else, the code that you will copy below is not for your board. But rather, the one provided as an example by Pinterest.

Next, go back to WordPress, click Appearance and choose Widgets.
On the left side, select Custom HTML and add it to the sidebar.
Paste all the codes from Pinterest and click Done.

And that’s it. Here’s our finished work.
